Odyssey Dawn

When I first saw that the US operation in Libya was called Odyssey Dawn I had to double check that I wasn't reading the Onion. Where is the room for parody? The government is actually naming their mission after a group of people just trying to get home after a war that dragged on for ten years (but most of them die in the attempt). Wow.

Perhaps they haven't actually read the Odyssey and only know it's more colloquial meaning. Or they figure that the average person only knows the colloquial meaning...

Surely before the name a billion dollar project, someone googles it?

I'm fairly certain the Pentagon uses consultants from the lipstick and makeup industry to name its military operations these days.

Apparently, its name was random.

It is random much like the naming of hurricanes is, someone still makes the list in the first place and they thought this should go on a list of names for wars.
