Meanwhile in New Zealand
Alasdair Thompson, chief executive of the Employers and Manufacturers' Association (EMA), had an explanation for why women earn less then men.
Apparently it is because: "Women take more sick leave than men," due to their "monthly sick problems".
If you live on this planet and in this millennium you may have trouble understanding what this time-traveler from the Victorian era is referring to, specifically menstruation. He seems to think women routinely take days off when menstruating.
I imagine he is also concerned about the females' voluminous petticoats getting caught in the looms.
It seems that this asshat is going to resign.
My heart bleeds for him.
Perhaps I should take the day off.

WTF Advertising
The current 'Sour Patch' advertisement strikes me is extremely weird, with extra weirdness and a dash of WTF. You see domestic violence often occurs in a cycle of violence followed by remorse and charm (followed by more violence, etc). Ha ha. Um. What? Or is the assumption that because the victim is a young man it isn't 'real' violence and so we can find it amusing?

Beyond Twiggy
I am sure the thought process behind the pinup calender Eizo (a medical imaging company) released last June was no more advanced than, hey--let's do a pin up calander with X-rays. But it does make me wonder...
- Why release a calendar in June?
- Would anyone actually put this on their wall?
- Why only use one model?
- Why do pinup models always wear high heels?

Some WTF from BMW
Things that are dodgy about this ad:
1) She looks under-age
2) Thinking of your car like a sexual partner is weird

Um....
So you can get colorful temporary tattoos to put on your child, so if they get lost at a theme park or in a busy mall, it will be easy for them (or a good Samaritan) to find you. Isn't that sensible. Isn't that useful?

Isn't that logo a kid with a number tattooed on his arm giving a stiff-arm salute?

WTF of the Week
"...the meeting was tempered with sadness as the family learned their smiling, blue-eyed, blonde ponytailed little girl had spent most of her life as a virtual slave." [Huffington Post]
Okay, so an eleven-year-old girl is abducted, imprisoned and raped over a period of eighteen years. That is not a virtual slave. That is an actual slave.

Another advertsing WTF

Creepy: beautified image of a man restraining a tense woman.
Nasty: pack of guy watching on
Full-fledged WTF: the idea that glorifying a rape scenario will enhance a fashion brand's image.

A centaur with a difference.
During a visit to the 'House on the Rock' tourist attraction in Wisconsin a friend (you know who you are) pointed out this carousal not-horse.I apologise for the poor quality of the picture but the damn thing was spinning around rather quickly under conditions of near darkness. It is one of 250-odd (and I do mean odd) carousal figures on what is billed as the world largest indoor carousal.
Anatomically speaking you must admit this this centaur lady is made of pure, 100% WTF. But then the House on the Rock is pretty high grade WTF throughout. (More about that later).

Womans Day says: Let Them Eat Cake
These are hard times and all the magazines are full of advice about how to be frugal. But if you are really short of money, I would suggest saving the $2.79 you might otherwise spend in Womans Day. Here is an example of the wonderful frugality advice they have:
"As for the bread, I try to always have another loaf in the freezer, but if that's used up, well, they can substitute an English muffin until grocery day comes around."
This is what happens when you get your frugality advice from a two income family who can save $80 just by cutting out impulse buys in the grocery store aisles. Personally I find this writer's one month "experiment" of being recreationally frugal despite still having money to throw about blithely condescending.
And the editor really rubs it by suggesting that this kind of advice is so shocking they were "taken aback" because falling back on English muffins is "no ordinary cost cutting" and "serious rethinking how you spend."
If this is what they have to offer people struggling with spirally costs, layoffs and the immanent threat of slipping under the poverty line perhaps they should seriously rethink how they run their magazine instead.

Vintage WTF

It is one of those teacher cliches to say there are no stupid questions. Bur as evidence to the contrary allow me to present this reader-submitted question from the February 1965 issue of Sexology magazine.
"Dear Doctor: during sexual relations with my wife I always have to manipulate her clitoris until she reaches orgasm. My wife says that during relations my penis never touched her clitoris. As far as I can see, what we are doing amounts to masturbation, only I am doing it to her instead of she doing it to herself. Will this endanger her health and make her sterile?"
